If you’re not sure whether your book is good enough to submit to a publisher, I can clear up the mystery with a simple manuscript review. I’ll read your full book and give you a detailed summary (usually 15 to 20 pages) of what works, what doesn’t, and how to revise to best prepare your book for querying and submitting. This service is a great option if you need a less in-depth developmental edit.

Sample Evaluation

Developmental Edits
Developmental editing focuses on the big picture. My edits will evaluate aspects of your story like plot, character development, point of view, and theme. This is the kind of feedback you want on an earlier draft when you want to know if your story will engage your readers in the way you want.
When you choose this service, I commit to reading your entire manuscript at least twice and leaving detailed comments regularly throughout to explain what works well, what issues I see, and potential solutions to address each issue. You may also request a sample (about a page or two) of substantive (line) edits to be included within the edited manuscript.
Sample Developmental Edit
Jeffrey originally requested substantive edits for his fantasy short story about a small village fighting off a dangerous necromancer. But I'm glad he agreed to a developmental edit first, because his story grew all the stronger for it. In my edits, I addressed various plot holes, underdeveloped aspects of the characters, and buried themes. I also gave suggestions for fleshing out the worldbuilding and preventing reader confusion at key points in the story.

Copyedits
Copyedits focus on the nitty-gritty details of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Your manuscript will receive special attention to anything related to grammar and usage, from the font of your quotation marks to the placement of each comma. This service includes corrections in capitalization, hyphenation, punctuation, spelling, subject/verb agreement, and pronoun and verb conjugation; reducing word count and passive voice; and establishing consistency and accuracy throughout your manuscript.

Matt's book, styled after an Indiana Jones adventure, was already incredibly well written and polished when he hired my to copyedit it. I prefer to edit clean stories without excessive vulgarity and swearing, erotic scenes, or detailed blood and gore. This doesn’t mean that I won’t edit books that deal with difficult topics and messy situations. In fact, I welcome these ideas in books! But I have personal standards I won’t set aside. If you aren’t sure whether your content is too graphic or not, feel free to reach out for a free sample edit.
